My husband and i enjoyed three nights here and we will be back. This part of the world is very beautiful with great car-free walks straight into The Quantocks or even down to the coast at Kilve. We are delighted to have found a special place to B&B – the guest rooms in this rare, historic house are deliciously appointed with thoughtful touches.

“…And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery…”

“..The Frost performs its secret ministry, Unhelped by any wind. The owlet's cry
Came loud—and hark, again! loud as before.
The inmates of my cottage, all at rest,
Have left me to that solitude, which suits
Abstruser musings: save that at my side
My cradled infant slumbers peacefully.”

Frost at Midnight

History

Poole House is thought to have been built in the late 17th century although some parts may be even older!

Thomas Poole lived in the house in the late 18th and early 19th century and was a local tanner with a keen interest in literature and philanthropy. He read extensively and enjoyed the company of the romantic poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge whom he supported during his time in Nether Stowey. The famous barrel room on the first floor is now a bedroom and Coleridge spent many hours in there reading and writing. Also visiting at the time were William and Dorothy Wordsworth and Charles Lamb.

Thomas Poole contributed generously to the village, for example, financing the Elementary free school, which is now the library – located at the top of Castle Street.

Poole House is now a grade 2 listed house and many original features remain including fireplaces and the Georgian interior.

Records show that even as late as the mid-20th century, parts of the house were used as a general store.
